Train Smart This Race Season
Every season we watch talented runners sabotage themselves the same way: too much, too soon, too fast. The fix is not more willpower — it is structure. Here is the framework our coaches use with every Harborlight athlete, from 5K hopefuls to marathon veterans.
Build The Base Before The Speed
Speed is built on easy miles. For the first four weeks of any plan, 80 percent of your running should feel conversational. That aerobic base is what lets you recover between intervals later — skip it and the whole season wobbles.
One Hard Day, Then Patience
We program a single quality session per week for beginners and two for experienced runners, never on back-to-back days. Between them: easy runs, rest or cross-training. Adaptation happens while you recover, not while you suffer.
Taper Like You Mean It
Cut volume by 40 to 60 percent in race week but keep a few short strides so your legs stay sharp. Arrive at the start line slightly over-rested rather than slightly over-cooked — you cannot gain fitness in the final seven days, but you can absolutely lose it.
